The Edit/Art Critique

Publication editors and art directors want, need and deserve feedback on their work. After all, they produce the product offered for sale. They want feedback not just from staff, friends and family. But frank and direct critiques by experienced veteran editorial and graphics professionals who have produced publications, won awards, and are at the top of their game.

Editors get feedback on the editorial mix, how on-target it is, article selection, writing style, editing and proofreading. Those doing evaluations consider the resourcefulness and enterprise that it appears was expended on major articles. They give feedback on cover lines, headlines and captions.

They ask questions such as whether the editor seems to know the readers and edits for them. Are articles insightful and compelling? Do they take readers below the surface and behind the scenes? Does the writing have energy and sparkle? Is it lively? Authoritative?

Art directors get feedback on the publication’s graphics, beginning with the cover – the most important page. Design, layouts, use of photography and art, get a thorough evaluation. Selection of typefaces and overall typography are scrutinized. Judges comment on uses of boxes, charts, diagrams, maps and call-outs. Placement of articles and ads and pacing of the publication are considered.

This is not a contest and there are no trophies or plaques. This feedback is invaluable in improving the product. And in preparing entries in editorial and art competitions.

You furnish your mission statement, a profile of the market served and, of course, copies of the publication. Once the critique report is in your hands, judges stand ready to have e-mail or telephone dialogue with editors, art directors and publishers. Comments and opinions get elaboration and clarification. And sometimes they get argued, which is only appropriate in subjective judging.

Editorial critiques are reasonably priced.
