About Mike Murrell

Mike Murrell has broad knowledge in launching, turning around and operating leading publications. He has worked in business-to-business, special interest and custom publishing fields. He is exceptional at determining market-media match and then quickly creating print, online and face-to-face products that profitably surround a target market.

Mike has a unique background in creating editorial and design content, in developing strategic circulation data bases, in successfully developing multiple revenue streams, has proven formulas for big launches at minimum risk, and has superb positioning, presentation, and sales skills.

Until recently he headed up a $9 million publishing group of international publishing giant VNU Business Media.  Prior to that he led the turnaround of a faltering publication through a revitalization initiative that included tightening focus, redesign and a 50 percent change in staffing. Revenue growth exceeded 25 percent in two consecutive years to more than $4 million, and profits more than doubled.

Earlier, at a major Wisconsin publisher, he was involved in overall publishing management as executive vice president, was a group publisher, launched new titles and was deeply involved in custom publishing. He also has custom publishing experience as part of management duties with a mid-sized advertising agency where his areas of responsibility included integrated services, including public relations, direct marketing and new media.

Mike also has a rich background in aviation. Serving in the U.S. Air Force, he was an aircraft commander and had additional duty as public information officer. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals in conjunction with 127 combat missions in Vietnam. After military service he was manager of worldwide public relations for Piper Aircraft Corporation followed by six years as a Boeing 727 pilot for Continental Airlines.

Mike Murrell says: “In publishing, as in flying, you carefully plan your work and then work your plan. Publishing is a team activity. The coach – the publisher – is key to selecting players, leading strategic planning and positioning, and getting everyone pointed in the same direction and pulling their share of the load. If the game plan needs changing, the coach needs to act decisively. But the one element of ultimate importance is that each team member must have an intense focus on the main objective – creating of maximum profits. That’s how we keep score. Otherwise, why play the game?”
